Pulmonary Rehabilitation Referrals
Welcome to Ohio Valley Hospital’s (OVH) Pulmonary Health Center. The following information will help you become familiar with the program, schedule, and activities that we offer.
OVH’s Pulmonary Health Center is designed for patients with a chronic respiratory disease such as COPD, Emphysema, Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Pulmonary Fibrosis and many other conditions affecting the lungs. The program combines education with therapeutic exercise and functional activities into a comprehensive 8 to 12 Week Program.
Your pre-program evaluation may include Pulmonary Function Studies, Laboratory Tests, an EKG, and a consultation with a physician who specializes in pulmonary medicine. Our therapists will evaluate your current level of functioning and work with you to design an individualized program to meet your needs.
8-12 Week Program
During the first session you will be evaluated by our therapists. Thereafter, you will participant in educational activities and a progressive exercise program. Most activities will take place individually. You will come to the program two to three days each week. Your visits will last approximately two hours and you will be given an exercise plan to continue at home.
Your exercise program will begin at a level based on your ability. It will start slowly and progress toward your goal each week. It will consist of aerobic conditioning activities such as paced walker or exercising on machines to improve your strength and endurance. Attention will be given to both upper and lower body muscle groups.
Education lectures and activities will cover a wide range of topics designed to help you fully understand your disease and give you the information you need to improve function and feel better.
The program is designed to stabilize the effect of your respiratory disease.
