A board-certified pathologist directs the daily microscopic examination of surgical specimens; rendering definitive diagnoses that are used by treating physicians for the best care of their patients. Tumors are studied by the pathologist using various histochemical and immunohistochemical stains that better define the diseases studied microscopically.

Skilled histology technicians provide such staining and tissue preparations.
